Leighton Meester is an American actress, singer and model. She is best known for her role as Blair Waldorf on the popular TV series “Gossip Girl”, and for her feature in Cobra Starship’s hit “Good Girls Go Bad”.
The star was born on April 9th in 1986, in Fort Worth,Texas. At the time, her mother, Constance Meester, was serving time in jail for involvement in the smuggling of marijuana from Jamaica into the United States. She was allowed to give birth to her daughter in a hospital and nurse her for three months, and then had to go back to prison to complete her sentence.
Leighton has put her past behind her, looking to live a different life than her parents did. She says that despite their criminal past they have given her a normal upbringing, and are nice people. She also stated that they have helped her be more open-minded and non-judgmental.
She started acting in local plays in Marco Island, Florida, where she lived at the time. After performing in a local production of “The Wizard of Oz” she wanted to pursue her acting career and moved to New York City with her family at the age of 11. There she started getting modeling jobs for Ralph Lauren, shooting with the well-known photographer and now filmmaker, Sofia Coppola.
At the age of 14, she moved to Los Angeles, California. Her major roles included Meg in the Disney movie “Monte Carlo” and Rebecca Evens in the horror film “The Roommate”. She is also involved in many charity events, and was the spokesperson for the “Life Can’t Wait” campaign in 2008. Its objective was to motivate women to pursue their dreams and it raised awareness about domestic violence. Meester also took part in Bulgari’s humanitarian effort for the “Save the Children” organization.
Leighton has two brothers, Douglas is her older than her, and Lex is younger. Lex has multiple health problems, and Leighton sent money to him and her mom to pay for his health care. In 2011, she filed a lawsuit against her mom claiming that the money she sent was misused by her mother. Her mother sued back accusing Leighton of breach of contract and physical abuse. Her mother wanted 3 million US Dollars but later dropped the charges.
The young actress is an inspiration to all. She encourages people, especially women to pursue their dreams and fights for equal rights. Even with her traumatic childhood, she grew to be a really kind person who has studied so hard and fought to do what she really wants: acting.
